Biography

A native of Macon, Georgia, I graduated from the University of Georgia (Woof! Woof! Woof!) with a degree in Health and Physical Education.  Subsequently, I honed my interests in environmental and experiential education in a multi-week Outward Bound rock climbing and backpacking experience in the White Mountains of Maine. In 1998, I moved to Beaufort County as a Physical Education teacher at Michel C. Riley and subsequently Bluffton Elementary. I completed my Masters in Educational Administration at Georgia Southern University in 2006, serving as Assistant Principal at both Bluffton and Broad River Elementary Schools before moving to Red Cedar Elementary as Assistant Principal for six years. In 2018, I became the principal of Whale Branch Elementary (WBE) and James J. Davis Early Learning Center (DELC) Schools.

My love of helping students appreciate their roles in developing healthy, confident, physically fit lifestyles led to my initiation of the first vertical climbing wall at Bluffton Elementary--the only one in Beaufort County at that time.  My concern with enabling students to become aware of environmental issues led to my certification in the Beaufort County Master Naturalist program in 2009 for teachers in Beaufort County.  In the summer of 2011, I was among 15 teachers across the state chosen for participation in “From the Rivers to the Sea,” a course sponsored by The SC Aquarium in Charleston. Subsequently, I volunteered on weekends in 2000-2009 as a docent at the Aquarium, introducing student classes and their teachers to the facilities and programs of the Aquarium. I helped create curricula for teachers using this program.

I totally endorse the philosophy we have at WBE and DELC that the health and growth of our students come first, always. Their needs and their concerns drive us to create the safest and most supportive learning environment for them to grow academically, physically, emotionally to help them become confident, competent citizens.

We--WBE/DELC team--believe “Absolutely, Positively Students First.”  We are committed to making that a real element in our interaction with each student each day.
