A veteran teacher with 37 years of experience has been named Beaufort County’s 2024-2025 District Teacher of the Year. Laura VanHorn, a second-grade teacher at Bluffton Elementary School, was selected and announced during a celebration honoring Teachers of the Year from all the district’s schools on Friday.
The grant will go towards after- school care programs.
Two Beaufort County School District students have been announced as semifinalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program and will advance to the next level of competition.
The previously approved calendar make-up days of December 23, 2024 and January 6, 2025 will be implemented to accommodate the two days of school closures associated with Tropical Storm Debby.
BCSD Schools were well represented at the 2024 All County Honor Band. The process started in November of 2023 when students auditioned for placement in either the Middle School Honor Band or the High School Honor Band.
As the state and Beaufort County School District (BCSD) continue the mission to ensure that at least 75% of students are performing at or above grade level by 2029, these results highlight both successes and areas for continued focus.

We understand that as parents and guardians you are eager to get the school year started, as are we. However, we want to ensure we do so safely. (We have many factors to consider, especially projected high-winds and flooding that can prohibit the safe travel of school buses.)
The finalists are Laura VanHorn, second-grade teacher at Bluffton Elementary School; Dr. Karen Parker, language arts teacher at Lady’s Island Middle School; Timothy Huesing, social studies teacher at Hilton Head Island Middle School; Melanie Willis, multi-age teacher at Daufuskie Island Elementary School; and Cinderella Shaw, fifth-grade teacher at Lady’s Island Elementary School.
Melissa Pender, Principal of Coosa Elementary, has been named the District's 2024-25 Principal of the Year. Whitney Harris of Mossy Oaks Elementary has been awarded the title of District Assistant Principal of the Year.

“Last year, we were glad to be able to offer this at 20+ schools, but now we are ecstatic to expand this to all of our schools,” said Superintendent Frank Rodriguez.
The report was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.
This year’s Expo is set for Saturday, July 27, at Battery Creek High School, located at 1 Blue Dolphin Drive in Beaufort. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Isabel Smith was recently announced as the 2024-25 Beaufort County School District (BCSD) Induction Teacher of the Year. Mauriana Sciullo was recently announced as the 2023-24 SC Induction Teacher of the Year.
